The gorgeous, tragic thing about this is that he’s saying the feeling of being betrayed by his doctor and friend is as bad as, if not worse than believing himself to have horrendously killed multiple people (including his own surrogate daughter). That’s how much Will trusted Hannibal. It’s a throwback to episode 5, when Hannibal asks if Will ever feels abandoned and Will says, “Abandonment requires expectation.“ Will wasn’t letting himself have any expectation of anyone, but for whatever reason he let his guard down for Hannibal Lecter and look where it got him. We can talk about how much Hannibal loves Will at the closure of s1, but I think the truly amazing and tragic thing is the degree that Will cared for Hannibal.
